The Horse Race of Ireland

Similar to England’s 2,000 Guineas is the Irish 2,000 Guineas and is top notch race in Ireland and some feel it is the sequel to England’s race. Because of this, many of the contestants that ran in the Newmarket Guineas make the trip to Curragh in Ireland every year to compete.
The two races are very similar as they both are offered to 3-year-old thoroughbreds and spans a distance of a mile. The only difference in the two is the ground the horses run on. The Curragh racecourse is more in the area of soft to heavy ground.
In theory, fillies are allowed to compete but the race is typically run by colts. Flat racing has be growing in the recent years with the will prize money growing along with it. Today the winnings in Ireland are comparable to that of England.
For those horses traveling from England to Ireland to race, there is a three week span between one race to the other for that reason. This give recuperating time for the horses so they are ready to run again. Only seven thoroughbred colts have earned the title of winning both races in the same year. A horse named Right Track was the first racehorse to achieve this feat back in 1969.
