The Epsom Derby Stakes

The horse race that is known for prestige and history is the Epsom Derby. Many races have been created from this classic and it is a testament to the class of racing of the top 3-year-olds thoroughbreds of Ireland and United Kingdom.
This race is run in July and is a two day long Derby meeting at the Epsom Racecourse and the length of the race is 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards. Of all of Europe’s top thoroughbreds, it is a rare event to see more than 12 horses in this race. Generally seen in this race are horses who have already won or at least placed in other Derby Trials.
Sir Charles Bunbury is the one who began the idea for this race and was actually at a dinner party that was celebrating the first run of the Epsom Oaks in 1779. The legend is that a coin toss was the deciding factor in the naming of this race and the original race lasted for more than a mile with the winner taking home about 1,000 pounds. It was extended to 1 mile 4 furlongs in 1784 and the starting position change later is where the additional 10 yards got added.
