There is Thoroughbred racing, Harness racing, Endurance racing, Quarter Horse racing and the scary to watch Steeplechase racing. In the early 1900s as the anti-gambling force crossed the country, the sport of horse racing was almost wiped out. By 1908 there were only 25 race tracks remaining but by 1908, it all turned around.
This is when Pari-Mutuel betting was introduced for the Kentucky Derby and more tracks began opening. Legalizing betting was passed by state legislatures and only because they got their cut.
The most famous horse, Man ‘O’ War was racing by the end of the first World War and so famous was he, that when he died over 2000 humans went to his funeral. Now it is the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing this is alive and well and actually included three races. If one horse wins all three races, he will receive the ‘triple crown’ and be the next most famous horse racing today.
