Belmont Stakes is the third of three races that make up the Triple Crown and the most important race in North America. This is where Crown titles can be won as well as lost by the finest racehorses alive, the thoroughbreds. This race takes place at Belmont Park Racecourse which is near New York and covers 1 mile 4 furlongs. Here, various competitors are seen that have already run in the first two races of the American Triple Crown and only those racehorses in the 3-year-old age group are allowed.
Beyond the border of the United States is where many sports media and racing fans come from to attend this event. More interest is generated by the fact that one of the competing horses has already won the two previous races being the Kentucky Derby and also the Preakness Stakes.
The history of this race goes back to August Belmont Sr. who financed the inaugural running at Jerome Park Racecourse back in 1867. The location of this race moved a few times in the beginning before finally ending at the racecourse named of its creator, Belmont Park. It had its down time like other tracks during the anti-betting legislation but returned to be as strong as ever.
